Merseyside Fire Support Network is looking for residents who have a few
hours to spare who could help with valuable work in the community.
The charity, that supports the work of Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service, carries out a range of services for victims of fire or to prevent fires from happening in the first place.
This includes clearing up after fires and floods and oven cleaning to take away fire risks.
But one particularly exciting project that is being developed in Southport, Halewood and Eastham is an Emergency Response Dogs initiative.
This is where a dog is trained to react in the event of a fire alarm sounding. The dog, from an animal shelter, is re-homed with a vulnerable resident in the community and when a smoke alarm actuates it presses a panic button, closes the door of the room to protect the resident, places a cloth at the foot of the door to prevent smoke entering and barks until emergency services arrive.
Little Ern was the first dog to be placed and he is now living with Betty Williams in Eastham, Wirral. Now another two are being trained, ready to be homed in Southport and Halewood.
The success of the project is dependent on willing volunteers, as they are needed for the feeding and walking of the dogs.
- Please contact FSN if you can spare a few hours to help with this project or to help with other services such as:
