The annual awards, now in their eighth year, recognise both the outstanding academic and personal achievements of pupils from schools across the borough in a grand ceremony at the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall.
Holly Barnabas has been in and out of hospital since losing her left eye to a rare childhood eye cancer at eighteen months old.Despite missing weeks of learning throughout her school career Holly has managed to improve her work and takes a very active role in the athletics team at Cronton Church of England Primary.
Nine-year-old Holly’s teachers say she is a delightful girl with a very positive attitude who is an excellent role model and inspiration to her peers.
Marni Ashworth, 13, who attends Christ the King Centre for Learning, has Ehlers Danlos Syndrome; a rare disorder of the connected tissue making her skin fragile and easily bruised and torn. Despite needing a full-time carer whilst in school, Marni has made excellent progress both on an academic and personal level. Her confidence has grown significantly and she is a high achiever in her school subjects. Described by her teachers as a positive, pleasant and hard working pupil, Marni is a credit to herself and to her family.
Four Year Six pupils from Mosscroft Primary School in Huyton, organised a cake sale to raise money for the Blue Peter Appeal. From generating awareness of the sale to baking the cakes, the pupils organised every aspect of the event which raised nearly £100.
One child who thoroughly deserves recognition is eight-year-old Michael Joseph. A pupil at Nine Tree primary school in Stockbridge Village, Michael has consistent excellent attendance and impeccable behaviour, despite facing family challenges. Over the last six months, his mum has been immobilised by a disease of the spine that has left her unable to walk and in a wheelchair, following treatment in intensive care.Michael’s teachers say he is a very friendly boy who is a pleasure to teach, and his standard of work and attitude has continued to be exceptional through his mother’s illness.
Another pupil who has overcome challenges is five-year-old Paul Ordinario. Originally from the Philippines. Paul started school at Whiston Willis primary with little English skills and a lack of confidence. Through encouragement from his parents and teachers, Paul has progressed tremendously in all areas and his English has reached the standard as his classmates’.Paul also has a special talent for playing the piano. With encouragement from his father, Paul has developed a passion for playing the instrument, soaring through his exams and grades. Paul has even showcased his talent by playing in front of the entire class.
