Recycling rubbish into art.

Art created from old rubbish was celebrated in an event in Knowsley.

A recycling event helped parents, children and carers to use their creativity on items that had been thrown away.

The Midas Touch project ran for two months at the George Howard Centre in Whiston and involved local families, schools, nurseries and holiday clubs.

They created things from cardboard boxes, CDs and old computer and printer parts that had been donated by local businesses.

The organisers then held a celebration of the work created and invited those who took part to look back on what they had done.

Play fair by farmers

School pupils in Kirkby want the public to play fair by cotton farmers in the developing world.

They’ve been highlighting the need for a fair price to be paid to those who grow and pick cotton in West Africa and India.

They say subsidies to farmers in rich countries and competition from synthetic fibres means the farmers get little for their crop.

But farmers involved in the Fairtrade initiative get paid a fair price for their cotton and a premium which is then invested in their community.

Pupils promote anti-gun crime messages

Earlier this year, Merseyside Police launched a competition aimed at young people under the age of 18, to discourage them from becoming involved in guns and gun-related crime.

The competition involved writing, filming, producing, broadcasting and promoting a three minute video dissuading their peers from joining gangs and highlighting the dangers of carrying and using a gun.  In addition, entrants had to evaluate the effectiveness of their video.  Following analysis of 150 evaluation forms, students felt that the video had a positive influence.

The competition took place across Merseyside and Kirkby Sports College represented the Knowsley borough.  Six year 9 and 11 students were selected to work on the campaign, which was subsequently uploaded and broadcast on YouTube and Merseyside Police’s website.

Young people show their talent

Talented youngsters in Knowsley put on their dancing shoes at the weekend as part of a scheme supporting young people in the area.

Around 50 young people from Knowsley organised the event on Saturday called ‘Outbreak’ at Prescot Community Church, where bands, solo singers, dance groups and rappers put on a performance.

The show was a project under the Support the Young scheme which aims to improve the lives and prospects of Knowsley’s youth by encouraging them to organise and promote events to raise money for trips and holidays and in the process learn about the benefits of work.

Housing chief hopes cutting red tape will drive growth

Knowsley Housing Trust’s (KHT) Chief Executive Bob Taylor has welcomed the decision to cut planning red tape in this week’s Budget.

He said the idea of making planning permission easier to drive forward economic growth, the numbers of homes built and the creation of jobs is positive, but added that he hoped local voices would still be heard in planning decisions.

“The devil may well be in the detail but I’m optimistic it will help in meeting house building targets and play its part in boosting growth.

Huyton women invited for breast screening

Women in Huyton are being encouraged to attend for Breast Screening. 

The mobile breast screening unit will be at Huyton Hey Road Car Park for the next four months.  Women registered with the following doctors will be invited over the next few months; Doctors at Manor Farm, Dr Bevan & Ayegba, Dr Alexander, Dr Sadiq, Dr Singhal and Dr Jayaram & Shantha.

Breast Screening can help to find small changes in the breast which may lead to cancer before there are any other signs or symptoms.  If these changes are found at an early stage, there is a very good chance of a successful recovery.

Prescot Producers Markets are back for 2011

Following the success of the Producers Markets in October and December last year, Knowsley are pleased to announce confirmed dates for the popular markets to return throughout 2011.
The markets will again bring Eccleston Street to life, running from 9am on the following Saturdays:

Huyton school tops athletics event

An athletics team from a Knowsley primary school has won a key competition.

A team made up of eight and nine year olds from St Margaret Mary’s in Huyton have won the Liverpool City School Sport Partnership Athletics Final.

It’s the second time the team of eight boys and eight girls has won the event which was held at the Everton Park sports centre.

St Margaret Mary’s were representing the Central Liverpool Sport Partnership in the contest and fifty other schools took part.
The Central Liverpool Sport Partnership links a number of schools with sports colleges in the area.

St Margaret Mary’s work with Cardinal Heenan sports college in Liverpool and won through earlier events to represent the partnership at the Finals.

The team practice after school and during dinner times and it was drawn from a wide group of children who volunteered to take part.

Claire Finnegan, PE Coordinator, at St Margaret Mary’s, said: “The team’s success is mainly due to their commitment towards each other.”

“They praise and encourage each other and above all really enjoy what they do.”

Raven Court demolition

£16m regeneration of Raven Court.

Bulldozers have been on site to pull down the old buildings to make way for a new 48,000 sq ft scheme with a new supermarket and a range of individual shopping units.

The major regeneration scheme will include a new Aldi supermarket, along with other well known retailers including Tesco, Home Bargains, frozen food store Cooltrader and bookmakers, William Hill.

A newsagent and a fish and chip takeaway are also relocating to the new development from the old centre to be joined by a range of other smaller shops. The plans also include a new bus interchange facility, car parking and possibly a new pub restaurant.

Following the demolition of the old buildings Cllr Dave Lonergan, Knowsley Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Economy and Skills, said: “Seeing the site being cleared is another significant step forward in this project and shows residents that real progress is being made in this major scheme.

“This new development will bring great benefits to the residents of Halewood, with a range of shopping outlets along with bus and car parking facilities at the heart of their community.

“I look forward to seeing the new development rise from the ground in the coming months, as I’m sure our residents do.”
