(Press Release) Election candidate Carl Cashman promises to give Whiston a choice they’ve never had – an alternative to a Labour town council that has neglected the town, he says.
“The people of Prescot and Whiston deserve better from their town and borough council,” Mr Cashman said. “They’ve been abandoned too long.”
Standing for the Liberal Democrats in Whiston North ward, he promises to fight for a referendum to give Whiston the choice to get out of Knowsley. The pledge is a head-on challenge to his opponents, who he says are forgetting about Whiston while making a “grab for power down at the Huyton Muncipal Buildings.”
He fought back against Labour suggestions that no mechanism exists for a referendum: “For a local referendum to be organised, 10 residents’ signatures are required, and then a public meetings must be called. Prescot has had this exact same referendum before, where residents voted overwhelmingly to get out of Knowsley. The borough council can’t ignore the people’s concerns for much longer.”
A petition against Knowsley Council’s decision to replace Prescot Leisure Centre with much smaller facilities has attracted over 2,000 signatures.
