A team of under 19 footballers from Knowsley have returned home as Champions from an international youth soccer tournament which took place in Dallas, USA over the past week.
The talented squad of 18 footballers won the tournament with a 4-2 victory against Ajax Gunners from Canada, bringing the Dallas Cup to Knowsley for the first time in the 32 year history of the competition.
Tour Manager Dave Mercer said “I am extremely proud of the team, they played really well throughout the tournament and to come away as winners is absolutely fantastic.
“This trip isn’t just about the football tournament; it gives the boys valuable insight into different cultures and allows them to experience another way of life which includes the squad staying with families in America.”
Knowsley Council has sent a team to take part in the international youth soccer tournament every year since 1991 and over the years many young people have been offered scholarships in USA as well as training and development opportunities in the UK, to support them to achieve their potential through sport. This year alone saw nine of the players offered football scholarships in the US.
The team’s participation in the Dallas Cup is part of a wider initiative by the Leisure and Culture team at Knowsley Council.
