Elderly residents in Knowsley have been learning how to surf the internet as part of a national initiative to get older people online.
Knowsley Housing Trust (KHT) invited some of its older residents to specially held Silver Surfers sessions at KHT offices last week. They learned how to shop safely, research their ancestry, book holidays and much more.
Many of the residents taking part had never used a computer before.
For Georgina Holmes, 76, from Cross Street in Prescot, it was the first time she had used the internet.
She is going on holiday to the Orkney Islands and used the session to find out more about where she would be staying.
She said: “I found the day really useful. Having never used the internet before I now know how to check where I am going on my holidays.”
They were arranged to coincide with a week-long series of events across the country aimed at engaging older people with computers and the internet, culminating in national Silver Surfers’ Day on Friday May 20.
Steve Heverin, Operational Director of Investment from KHT said: “The internet is such a useful tool that has changed the way we live our lives. These sessions helped our older residents build confidence in surfing the web and learn new computer skills.
“For many this was their introduction to computers and they found it really useful.”

I discovered the day which is really useful to me. Having never used the world wide web before I now know how to have a look at where I am going on my holidays.
