The Romanian paralympic team has teamed up with Knowsley Council to use the borough’s leisure facilities as they prepare for the 2012 Olympic games.
A number of training camps have been arranged throughout this year and next year. The first camp took place last month, with the swimming and tennis team visiting Knowsley to train and take part in the commonwealth torch relay at all seven Centres for Learning.
Following on from this, the swimming team then went on to compete in the European Championships in Berlin.
Members of the team recorded personal bests and secured qualifying times for the London 2012 Paralympics.
“The team is looking forward to visiting Knowsley for their next training camp - it is an ideal location for the team to train and prepare them for one of the most important experiences of their lives.”
Cllr Eddie Connor, Knowsley’s Cabinet Member for Leisure, Community and Culture added “It has been our privilege to host the first of many training camps and I am delighted that the team have achieved such great results following their recent visit here. We are very proud of our international relations here at Knowsley and we hope that the newly formed partnership with the Romanian Paralympic Committee will deliver a wealth of benefits for both the athletes and Knowsley as a borough.”
