The MAFIA – an adult dance group in Kirkby - have proved they are ‘smooth criminals’ with their street dance moves.
The Southdene Adult Dance Group formed just over 12 months ago and has been supported by Knowsley Housing Trust with donations towards a dance and tai chi tutor, venue costs and t-shirts.
The group danced under the name MAFIA, or Mature And Fit Inclusive Adults, at KHT’s Community Day in Huyton on August 4 for the second year running, dancing to music from the likes of Lady Gaga and JLo.
“We like to surprise people at dance displays by starting out with a waltz and then going into our street dance.
“People of all abilities can get involved. We are always trying something new, from street dance and tai chi to salsa, line dancing and Zumba. There is a good social side to the group as well and we take members on day trips.
“We rely on the support we have received from organisations like KHT to help us keep going.”
They meet weekly at Southdene Community Centre and have 20 members ranging from age 50 to 83.
Terry Bonner, KHT Operational Director of Landlord Services, said: “The MAFIA dancers are always a hit at our Community Day. It is a fun way for older people to socialise and keep active.”
The group meets every Thursday from 1pm to 3pm at Southdene Community Centre. Anyone who would like to get involved can go along to a session and find out more.
