The magic of Narnia comes to Knowsley this Christmas.
A production of the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is on at the new Knowsley Leisure and Culture Park on Saturday 10th December at 7pm.
It will also be shown at the CUC in Liverpool the following day on Sunday 11th December.
It's being staged by the Halewood Youth Theatre and is the result of months of rehearsals.
“We’ve been working on this since May,” said Kate Gorst, director of Altru Drama, which runs Halewood Youth Theatre in partnership with Knowsley Arts and Heritage Service.
“It’s been an amazing experience for everyone involved. The young people have been involved in set design and costumes as well as acting.
The production takes a new angle on the familiar story of four children evacuated during the Blitz to the countryside, who find a wardrobe that leads to the fantasy world of Narnia.
Kate said: “Our version starts with a modern family who find out what happened to the wartime children.
“It’s a slightly different spin but the same story. It’s about the importance of being a good person and being honest and the rewards that come if you are.”
There are lots of vintage costumes and stunning sets in the production and the young people have been involved in all aspects of the performance.
The theatre group received a grant for the show from Knowsley Council’s BIG Deal that supports young people’s projects.
They also raised £400 by running cake sales and a fundraising event at the Dales centre in Halewood.
Kate said: “I’m so impressed by what they’ve managed to do. They’ve really pushed themselves and created something that is really spectacular.”
Tickets for the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe are available from both venues (Knowsley Leisure & Culture Park and Liverpool Contemporary Urban Centre) or from Altru Drama on 0151 443 0333.
