British Weather Can’t Keep a Good Festival Down

Neither the football nor the threat of rain kept music lovers from the Prescot Festival on Sunday night.

Concertgoers packed into the Parish Church for the Diamond Jubilee-themed finale to 10 days of arts and music in the historic Lancashire town. The 17th-century building reverberated to the sound of such patriotic hymns as Jerusalem and Land of Hope and Glory, as Aughton Male Voice Choir and soprano Laura Hudson brought the festival to a close in traditional Proms style.

A busy programme this year opened on Friday, 15 June, with Parr Band, and continued with acts ranging from the Liverpool Mozart Orchestra and Bentley Operatic Society to Liverpool Harmonic Gospel Choir and Metropolitan Cathedral organist Richard Lea.

There was also time for a barn dance, acoustic music, comic poetry and a special screening of the hit 2006 film The Queen, starring Dame Helen Mirren in a performance that won her both an Oscar and a BAFTA.

“This is now our eighth annual festival,” said Artistic Director Dr Robert Howard, “and we continue to exceed even our own expectations with such an impressive breadth of artistic skill and musical talent on show.”

Plans for the next festival are already underway, with the Ninth Annual Prescot Festival of Music and the Arts scheduled to go ahead from 21st to 30th June 2013.
