Trading Standards officers have seized thousands of illegal cigarettes from two addresses in Knowsley.
The operation took place in Kirkby and was based on intelligence provided to the council.
Working with the Trading Standards Regional Tobacco Team and Merseyside Police, officers seized more than 5,700 cigarettes from a property in Tower Hill, along with 69 empty 200 sleeve boxes. The haul had a street value of almost £3,500.
Meanwhile, almost 2,000 cigarettes and 750g of tobacco worth £450 were found at a house in Southdene.
None of the cigarettes or tobacco had duty paid on them or complied with UK health warning requirements.
Cllr Andy Moorhead, Knowsley Council’s Cabinet Member for Corporate and Customer Services, said: “We take the problem of illegal tobacco extremely seriously because of the effect on people’s health and the negative impact on legitimate local businesses.
“The sale of illegal tobacco is certainly not a victimless crime. Research clearly shows that it helps to fund organised crime and makes it easier for children to start smoking.
“Operations like this show the value of information given to us by the community and I would encourage anyone with information about these crimes to speak to us in confidence.”
