It’s now just over a few weeks to go until the UK’s biggest bike race, The Tour of Britain, comes to Knowsley.
Over a hundred of the world’s top cyclists will be competing against the clock along a 10 mile circuit of the borough on Tuesday, 17 September.
As well as your chance to catch all of the action, there is also a range of activities to keep you entertained throughout the day.
In addition to being the start and finish for the time trial, Knowsley Safari will host a cycling village, a community marquee and sporting fun for school children between 10am and 3pm. Plus, the sea lion shows, birds of prey shows, fairground rides, meercats, the restaurant and shop are also available throughout the day.
Knowsley Village, with its shops, pubs and local facilities, is a great place to see an exciting part of The Tour of Britain time trial as riders speed along Knowsley Lane before turning at the top of the Village into Mill Lane. Local schools and community groups will be running their own sporting activities to celebrate The Tour, and will join the route throughout the day to wave banners and cheer the riders on.
Cllr Eddie Connor, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Community and Culture, commented “This really is a fantastic opportunity to showcase the borough, entertain our residents and visitors as well as hosting this prestigious race. Last year’s event saw thousands of visitors descend on the borough and I hope next month’s event is even more successful.”
“Events such as this help to promote the borough’s Cycling Strategy, which encourages and supports more people to cycle - whether that’s for fun, to get to work or to take up the sport professionally. If you are inspired by The Tour, come along to our cycling village at the safari park on the day where you can find out more about the range of cycling opportunities in Knowsley.”
