Evo-Stick Division One North - Saturday 27th October
Prescot Cables defeated Ossett Albion thanks to a hat trick from Connor McCarthy in an entertaining and eventful match with Ossett having two players sent off.
Cables Manager Dave Powell made three changes from the team which had lost to Farsley last week Dempsey, Kusaloka and Menagh replacing Benn, McMillan and Hoctor.
Ossett kicked off playing towards the Hope Street End.
Cables were awarded a free kick on 4 minutes after Kusaloka was brought down. From the free kick taken by Dempsey, Murphy’s header was saved on the line by Ossett keeper Rhodes. Ossett then had a spell of pressure and Cables keeper Reid cleared from Muller and Kelly. Kusaloka then had the ball in the net but his effort was ruled out for offside. A cross by Doran was then cleared for a corner, the corner kick in turn being cleared by the Ossett defence.
The action flowed from end to end and it was Ossett’s turn next winning a corner from which Owen had a header and Metcalfe a shot blocked by the Cables defence. A free kick taken by Murphy was headed clear by Gay and Rhodes was first to a long ball from McCarthy. Menagh then broke down the left playing the ball inside to McCarthy but Ossett keeper Rhodes won the race to the ball.
Ossett equalised on 34 minutes when they caught the Cables defence napping from a short corner. Patrick McGuire put a low cross into the box, the Cables defence failed to move out and Dale Kelly scored with a deft flick into the far corner of the net. Adam Reid then saved from McGuire after the Cables defence had failed to clear. Just before the break Menagh’s pass to Doran was intercepted by Jackson who passed inside to McGuire who shot just past the far post.
Cables started the second half on the attack, Bannister chipping the ball over to Kusaloka whose cross just evaded McCarthy at the far post. McCulloch then took a long free kick from the left, Murphy timing his run to perfection but his header went just over the bar. Cables were warded a free kick on 52 minutes when Kusaloka was fouled on the edge of the box. Dempsey chipped the ball over the wall and Rhodes made a fine save tipping the ball over the bar for a corner. Dempsey took the corner which was played back to him by McCarthy and his shot from a narrow angle hit the Ossett bar. Reid was then brought into action pushing away Kelly’s shot, Lucas hitting the ball wide.
From the goal kick Cables regained the lead on 60 minutes, McCarthy latching on to it and scoring with a powerful shot into the bottom corner of the net. Shortly afterwards Ossett centre back Henry Owen was shown a red card for a late challenge. Cables made their first substitution on 64 minutes, Mike Smith replacing Bannister. Jamie Meanagh then produced a fine run from the left cutting inside and unleashing a powerful shot which went just over the bar. Doran then dispossessed an Ossett defender playing the ball into McCarthy who unselfishly passed to Kusaloka whose shot was saved by Rhodes. Menagh then produced another fine shot which Rhodes in the Ossett goal tipped over the bar.
Cables scored a third goal on 79 minutes when Menagh sent a beautifully weighted pass over the Ossett defence for McCarthy who put the ball away into the far corner of the net in fine style to complete his hat trick. Cables made their second substitution, Ashurst replacing Connor McCarthy who left the pitch to a standing ovation.
Ossett produced a good move between Jackson, Durham and Brown with Durham’s long shot being saved by Reid. Cables responded with Mike Smith firing just over the bar for Cables. On 86 minutes Ossett right back Stefan Holt received a red card for tripping Jamie Menagh as he was about to go clear into the Ossett penalty area.
Cables made their final substitution, Hoctor replacing Dempsey who like McCarthy before him left the field to loud applause. Cables looked to add a fourth goal, Kusaloka having a shot saved and Doran shooting wide at the far post from Meangh’s deep cross. Ossett pulled a goal back deep into injury time when Ged Murphy deflected Ben Jones’s cross into his own net.
