The Safer Knowsley Partnership is highlighting the issue of domestic abuse over the festive period.
The multi-agency campaign aims to raise awareness of the problem which research shows increases at this time of year due to the increase in alcohol consumption, as well as additional financial and emotional stress.
Domestic abuse can take many forms, including verbal, psychological, emotional, social, financial and racial, as well as physical.
The launch of the campaign aims to reduce the spike in domestic abuse at this time of year, which is fuelled by an increase in alcohol consumption affecting behaviour and actions.
Reducing your alcohol consumption is simple. Set yourself a limit and stick to it when going out. Make a drink last longer by adding a mixer and alternate alcoholic drinks with soft ones. Don’t drink on an empty stomach.
Home measures are usually more generous than pub ones so choose a smaller glass and don’t fill it to the top.
As well as encouraging victims to come forward, the campaign is also asking offenders to look at their behaviour and make steps to change. One way to do this is attendance on the InPact programme - Intervening in Partnership Abuse Change for Tomorrow. Matthew Ashton, Director of Public Health at Knowsley Council, said “For many people, Christmas is a happy time of year but some homes in Knowsley won’t have a Christmas filled with presents, fun and laughter but with fear and abuse.
“There are no excuses – the Safer Knowsley Partnership has come together to ensure our residents have access to the advice and support available to help victims who are in abusive situations, as well as offenders who want to change their behaviour. Our message is simply - help really is only a phone call away.
Call Knowsley’s Domestic Violence helpline on 0800 953 4433 for help and support. Alternatively, for men who want to change their behaviour, the InPact programme can help – call 0151 548 3333.
