KNOWSLEY is helping improve the lives of people with dementia.
That’s thanks to a pioneering initiative set up by Knowsley Housing Trust (KHT) which aims to ensure all its communities are ‘dementia-friendly’ places to live.
Knowsley Housing Trust, which is part of First Ark Group and manages thousands of homes in Knowsley, has joined the Dementia Action Alliance and set out plans to ensure people living with the condition receive the support they need.
Its dementia action plan includes:
- Working with Liverpool House of Memories to give dementia awareness training to 107 front line KHT staff.
- Selecting members of staff as dementia champions to actively promote dementia awareness.
- To create a ‘centre of excellence’ open to all residents of Knowsley who are either living with dementia or have family/friends who have been diagnosed.
Martina Daly, Director of Customer Service and Customer Support at KHT, said: “There are 800,000 people with dementia in the UK and this number is set to grow, so it is important to prepare our communities for the challenges ahead and ensure that those who live with dementia feel valued and supported.”
“I am delighted to welcome KHT to the Dementia Action Alliance- the first organisation from the area to do so. By joining, KHT will help to create both an organisation and a community where people with dementia feel understood and supported to live independent, fulfilling lives. I urge any organisation interested in improving outcomes for people with dementia to take action by joining the Alliance.”
KHT’s Sheltered Housing team already delivers support to approximately 800 residents in 621 homes and is currently developing two extra care schemes providing 261 homes with a higher element of care and support and a dementia friendly ethos.
Its new ‘centre of excellence’ will be open to all residents of Knowsley who are either living with dementia or have family/friends who have been diagnosed. It will offer a café experience where people can get support and advice, as well as use assistive technologies.
