Knowsley gets ready to celebrate Independents' Day
Knowsley is flying the flag for local retailers and supporting diversity on the high street.
On 4th July 2014, across the country, the public will be encouraged to buy at least one item from their local, independent shop to celebrate Independents' Day 2014.
Last year, thousands of businesses in over 150 locations across the UK took part, with activities such as street festivals and special promotions to mark the day.
With over 160,000 independent retailers making up 92% of all retail businesses in the UK, their importance to local economies as well as their contribution to a location's identity and community is unrivalled.
Organised by the National Skills Academy for Retail and People 1st and now in its fourth year, the campaign celebrates the contribution independent businesses make to the UK. It is also helping small businesses develop their skills, with a package of support available to destinations across the UK.
To raise awareness of the campaign, Knowsley Council is organising activities in Huyton town centre including a 'wheel of fortune' where shoppers can have a chance, with any purchase at a participating retailer from Monday 30 June to Friday 4 July, to win vouchers to spend in one of Huyton's many independent shops. Free tea and scones will be available from the marquee which will be located in the town centre.
Cllr. David Lonergan, Cabinet Member for Economy, Regeneration and Skills said, "We are getting behind this campaign as we understand how important diversity in retail is. Independents' Day aims to highlight the huge range and variety of independent retailers that we have in Knowsley, which make our towns interesting and varied places to visit and shop."
