The school summer holidays are just around the corner which means it will soon be time for children to take up the challenge to read six books over the long break.
'Mythical Maze' will be the theme for this year's Summer Reading Challenge and Knowsley's libraries will have a range of fantastical book collections for children to choose from.
To complete the challenge children need to read six books from the collections, or any six books borrowed from the library, and will be able to collect stickers, bookmarks, key rings and wristbands along the way. All those who complete the challenge will receive a medal and certificate.
Pupils at Park Brow Community Primary in Kirkby are really excited about this year's challenge after they scooped the cup last year for the school with the most children completing the challenge.
Kyle, a Year 3 pupil, recommends 'Stories from around the World: Egyptian Myths' by Kathy Elgin, he said:
"We're going on holiday to Egypt this year so I really wanted to read this book and find out more about the pyramids."
Laila, a Year 1 pupil, enjoyed 'Tinga Tinga Tales Why Lion Roarrrs' by Claudia Lloyd, she commented:
"My favourite part is when crocodile gets scared of lion and runs away!"
Cllr Eddie Connor, Knowsley's Cabinet Member for Leisure, Community and Culture, said:
"Knowsley's libraries are delighted to be running the Summer Reading Challenge again this year. It's a fabulous initiative to get more children and families into the library over the school holidays, and to make reading a fun part of the summer break.
"Children are sure to love this year's Mystical Maze theme with stories packed with dragons, monsters and fairies, providing lots of opportunities for magical adventures over the summer holidays."
The Library Service will also be hosting a variety of 'Mythical Maze' themed activities to keep the children entertained over the school holidays including story times, crafts, games and creative writing competitions.
