SATURDAY 16TH AUGUST 2014 - EVO-STIK DIVISON ONE NORTH
Prescot Cables started the season with a goalless stalemate against Ossett Albion at Hope Street. Cables Had the better opportunities to win the game and Adam Rhodes in Albion’s goal was the busier of the two goal keepers.
It was new manager Neil Prince’s first competitive game in charge and there were eight new faces in the Cables line up.
Ossett kicked off playing towards the Knowsley end. However it was Cables who launched the first attack from which Charlie Stoker’s shot was deflected for a corner. Mclaughlin took the corner from the right but the referee blew for a foul in the penalty area and awarded Ossett a free kick. Soon afterwards. Mclaughlin tried a chip shot from the edge of the penalty area but Rhodes saved comfortably. Noble and Harrison linked up down the left for Ossett but Dodd made a fine tackle putting the ball out for a throw in. Bannister then had an attempt on goal for Cables receiving the ball from Milne but hit his shot over the bar. On 22 minutes Cables won a corner on the left which was taken by McLaughlin. The ball was headed clear by the Ossett defence but played back in again by Cables and Rhodes did well to save Joe Evans shot.
Ossett started the second half on the offensive. Brown received the ball down the right in a sweeping passing movement but his cross was cleared by the Cables defence. Hardaker then played the ball up to Kelly who laid it off to Milnes who fired high over the cross bar. Noble then moved threateningly into the Cable’s penalty area but Dodd came to the rescue with a fine sliding tackle. It was a good spell of pressure from Ossett and Gibson had to be alert coming well out of his penalty area to kick clear and then doing well to hold the ball under pressure from a corner taken by Noble.
Eventually Cables began to mount an attack and Rhodes made a good save from Mark Kilroy’s long range shot. Ossett forced another corner and this time Gibson gathered at the second attempt. Cables made their first change, Yunas Giwa Landre replacing Steve Milne and he certainly added some pace and presence to the Cables attack. Brown who had looked dangerous for Ossett since coming on tried a chip shot which went over the bar and then he sent Noble though on goal with a fine pass but he placed his shot wide of the near post.
Cables made two further changes, Corlett and Black replacing Stoker and Bannister. Corlett went close to giving Cables the lead when he showed excellent skill in controlling the ball and firing just over the cross bar. Cables continued to push forward in search of the winner and Giwa Landre advanced into the penalty area on the left side laying the ball off for Black whose shot was saved at the far post by Rhodes.
