Experts have warned that more than 6,000 people in Knowsley are at risk of losing their sight to a condition that could be detected with a free and simple test.
Retinopathy is the leading cause of blindness in adults of working age, and people with diabetes are at increased risk of developing the condition.
However, it can be treated if detected early enough.
The only way to detect retinopathy is through eye-screening, which is free for all Knowsley residents who have diabetes. Screening takes about half an hour and is completely painless.
Janet Rhodes, of Knowsley Primary Care Trust, said: "The test involves placing a few drops in the eye which allows a photograph to be taken of the back of the eye. The test is totally painless and absolutely free.
"Retinopathy doesn’t usually present any symptoms until it is too late. If you are not tested for it you won’t know if you’ve got it. Your sight is one of your most valuable assets, don’t risk losing it."
People with diabetes should have their eyes tested at an accredited optometrist at least once a year.
