School children in Knowsley have their walking boots on this week in an effort to promote fitness and eco-friendly transport.
As part of 'Walk to School Week' students from St Leo's and Southmead Primary School in Whiston, along with schools from all over Knowsley, organised the walk in partnership with Travelwise and Living Streets. The aim is to raise awareness of road safety and the need to reduce car usage for short term journeys.
This year's theme, 'Join the Adventure', will see 2 million children expected to walk to school, where they will join in a range of activities to promote the benefits of regular walking.
Running from 22nd-26th May, Knowsley's Road Safety and Travel Plan Team will send information packs to primary schools throughout the borough, which will include posters and wall charts, and inform children on how they can keep fit and promote reduced car pollution by getting friends, family and teachers, to walk rather than drive on short journeys.
In 2002, the council introduced the walking-bus project, which saw an organised walk route set up by local councils, whereby teachers would lead pupils along a designated walk route, to and from school. The route would pass several key spots across the area where students could join or leave the group at leisure.
The project proved a massive success in not only ensuring student’s safety, but also reducing road congestion, while increasing awareness of the benefit of regular walking and healthy living.
