With issues of the environment high on the international agenda, Knowsley Council and Knowsley Housing Trust are working with the borough’s youngest residents to encourage them to consider their impact on the world around them.
Knowsley schools are being encouraged to devote time in class to speak to children about green issues and help them understand the small changes they and their families can make to help the environment.
Cllr Eddie Connor, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Community and Culture, said: “Looking after our environment is big news at the moment and at Knowsley we are already doing a lot of work to target young people whose generation will be crucial when it comes to making green living a reality.
“For that reason, environmental education has never been more important, particularly as we are now in the UN decade of Education for Sustainable Development, which began last year.”
Knowsley Environmental Education Network (KEEN) has developed an information booklet for teachers, giving them advice and tips on environmental issues and details of support they can receive to teach environmental education and make their school more environmentally friendly. Topics covered include eco-schools, healthy lifestyles, green travel plans, ranger activities, recycling sessions and many more.
The booklet, which is now also available online at www.knowsley.gov.uk/environment/sustainability, was funded by Knowsley Housing Trust, as part of their partnership work with Knowsley Council on environmental campaigns and education across the borough. In addition, ten lucky schools were selected to receive a free performance of the environmental play “Promise the Earth” from Konflux Theatre in Education.
