Six minutes from the end of this match, Cables' supporters couldn't believe they were being held to a draw having dominated the second half so completely. Four minutes later they were in a state of shock as their hope of three points against one of the form teams of the division lay in tatters.
The first real goalscoring opportunity of the match came after 9 minutes when Marvin Molyneux took a free kick from 35 yards. His shot did not trouble Andy Richmond in the visitors' goal. Four minutes later Steve McEwan shot wide. But after 17 minutes it was Matlock who took the lead. An innocuous looking cross came over from the right and fell to the feet of Gary Webster who tapped the ball just over the line.
After 34 minutes Eamonn Price was waltzing through the Matlock penalty area preparing for a shot on goal. His endeavours ended when a Matlock defender handled the ball. Dean Thurston stepped up to take the penalty and the sides went in at half time with the score Cables 1 Matlock 1.
The second half was a much more entertaining spectacle with the home side making a mockery of the difference in league position.
Eamonn Price shot wide after 47 minutes and a minute later Adam Flynn defended well to break down a Matlock attack. Nine minutes later Dean Thurston shot over the bar. The visitors staged an attack from the goalkick and once again it was Flynn who rescued the home side.
After 59 minutes came the best shot of the match when Matlock's Neil Ashley was unlucky to see his 25 yard shot go just over the bar. Three minutes later substitute Steve Warne shot over the bar from just outside the penalty area.
Although Cables dominated the second half, they were unable to turn dominance into a goal. There were only 12 minutes remaining when Marvin Molyneux put a cross on the head of Karl Connolly who headed over the bar.
With Cables' supporters feeling disappointed at having to settle for a draw, disaster struck for the home side. A cross from the right found its way to Ian Holmes who shot past Ryan McMahon from close range.
The goal seemed to knock the confidence out of Cables and with two minutes remaining another cross from the right found its way to Webster who scored his second and Matlock's third. Final score Prescot Cables 1 Matlock Town 3 - not a true reflection of the match.
