Kirkby residents gathered last week to voice their objections to the planned Everton FC stadium in the town.
While Knowsley MP George Howarth announced poll results showing support for the project, about 500 locals met at St Chad's Church to oppose the plans.
Commenting on this website, organiser Rev. Tim Stratford wrote that the poll, which found 51% support the stadium, "must be treated with some scepticism".
The poll "was not a survey of Kirkby residents but of people "in and around the town"," he said. "The methodology used means this includes business owners, employees, visitors and people resident in neighbouring communities."
Rev. Stratford also pointed to inconsistencies in the results, which he says suggest that "the interviewer must have led the respondents to some extent."
The proposed regeneration scheme for Kirkby also includes plans for a Tesco supermarket.
