Internationally renowned solo long-distance yachtswoman Dame Ellen MacArthur DBE is set to raise the mast on a brand new, innovative state of the art Sail Dive Centre at Oakmere Community College in Liverpool.
Glaciere has been providing sailing and diving tuition for young people in Liverpool since 2003. Oakmere, which has now taken over Glaciere, provides vocational training and exciting positive activities to at risk and disadvantaged 13-19 years olds in Merseyside. The venture has secured significant funding, enabling the college to design and build a magnificent new and totally unique facility for the City. The Glaciere Sail Dive Centre is exclusive to Merseyside and the only one of its kind in the UK.
A high profile opening of the new centre, which is worth in the region of £500,000, is to take place on Friday 14 August when Ellen MacArthur will declare the Glaciere Sail Dive Centre officially open at 2pm. The event will feature informative presentations and guests will have the opportunity to view the superb facilities and watch demonstrations taking place in the specifically designed training pool.
Ellen MacArthur said:
"I was really excited to be asked to open the new Glaciere centre at Oakmere Community College which is providing some brilliant facilities for local people to go sailing and diving. I will be in Liverpool as we sail round the country on The Ellen MacArthur Trust Skandia Round Britain Voyage of Discovery. One of the great things about this trip is all the fantastic people we are meeting along the way, and of course, Liverpool is no exception!”
She continued:
“I would like to say a huge thanks to Dave Murray and his team at the Glaciere Sail Dive Centre for all their help in preparing for the arrival of our boat Scarlet Oyster in Liverpool and making us feel so welcome here."
The Glaciere Sail Dive Centre at Oakmere has been created from what was previously an industrial unit, never before used for learning.
The development of the centre has been supported by Stepclever and
YSDF. The new purpose built nautical style centre will allow Oakmere to
offer further accredited learning and enrichment opportunities to
students, enabling them to progress to employment, education or
training.
The centre will also provide classrooms, meeting rooms, changing facilities, a retail outlet and boasts a 6ft deep swimming and diving training pool.
