Pupils and parents in Knowsley are being asked to walk to school in a week long call to start the day in a healthy way.
Thousands of local children are expected to take part in Walk to School week as part of a national campaign to cut traffic congestion and pollution.
It is being promoted here by Knowsley Council’s Road Safety and Travel Plan Team and TravelWise Merseyside.
It runs from October 5 to 9, but pupils and parents are being asked to keep up the good work throughout October and beyond.
It is also hoped that walking to school will catch on in general and encourage people to become more active.
Knowsley’s cabinet member for Regeneration, Economy and Skills, Cllr Graham Morgan said: “We need to cut the number of cars around our schools at the start and end of the school day.
“The petrol fumes and congestion can make the approach to school unpleasant and potentially dangerous.
“But we are also hoping that people will feel better for walking rather than driving and it might tempt them to try out other types of exercise.”
There will be wall charts for the schools taking part, to record how children get to school, posters, activity diaries and stickers.
