Radio City’s sports editor Steve Hothersall joined in the celebrations on Friday evening as communities in Knowsley came together to recognise the borough’s sports and cultural achievements.
Steve played host to the Sport and Cultural Awards 2014, which were held at Knowsley Leisure & Culture Park.
The awards recognise the outstanding achievers and performers in Knowsley who have made a real difference and enriched people’s lives.
Among the prize winners were volunteers, coaches, junior achievers, school sports teams, sports clubs and people who’ve fought back from illness.
Some of the highlights from the evening including presentations to Dave Cargill who received the Inspiration Award for his hard work creating a better playing environment at Whitefield Cricket Club. West Derby Hockey Club have achieved so much this past year and scooped four awards for the club and some of their members. Sarah Smedley for Adult Active Achiever, Matthew Gotts for Coach of the Year, Rob Adams for a lifetime dedicated to the sport and the club tself won Club of the Year.
The Adult Performing Artist of the Year was won by Vera Farrell. In the last 12 months she has appeared in many productions including a MATE Production of Grace and the Sea.
Throughout the evening, a range of top-class entertainment was providing by local performers, including Step up Dance, the Halewood Community Choir, the Glee Choir and Ash Randall who demonstrated his amazing Freestyle football skills.
Other award winners included Aimee Smith, who was presented with Young Visual Artist of the Year and Michael Owens for his Outstanding Contribution to Health and Well Being through Leisure and Culture.
Councillor Eddie Connor, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Community and Culture, said “Each year, I am immensely proud at the volume of entries we receive for these prestigious awards. It clearly demonstrates the wealth of talent and commitment we have towards sports and culture in Knowsley. Well done to everyone who was nominated and the very worthy winners.”
