Three young students have recently achieved their 1st Degree Black Belts in the Korean martial art of Taekwondo.
Joshua Alvers (9), Callum Edwards (10) and Philip Zhu (10) all train at North West Spirit Taekwondo under instructor Chris Davies (31), 3rd Degree Black Belt. They are dedicated students, training up to four times per week, and they have been training especially hard over the last few months in preparation for the Black Belt Grading. This examination tests students on various aspects of Taekwondo; including sparring ability, technical skill and even Korean terminology. Students can be asked to demonstrate anything from the entire white-to-black belt syllabus, which takes at least three and a half years of training to complete.
The grading itself took place in Derby on Sunday 12th April, where students were assessed by several 7th Degree masters from Global Taekwondo International (GTI). Despite being slightly nervous, all students performed with confidence and proficiency, and were delighted to receive the news that they successfully achieved their 1st Degree Black Belts.
The three are now among the club’s youngest ever Black Belts and they have become an inspiration to their fellow students. They are looking forward to learning the more advanced black belt syllabus and testing their abilities against other Black Belts in future tournaments.
One of the club’s instructors, Robert Davies (54), was also successful at the Black Belt Grading, and was proud to achieve his 3rd Degree Black Belt.
The success of the club’s Black Belt students is a reflection of their hard work and commitment to training, and their instructor and fellow students are very proud of their achievements.
