Spirited Seven Selected for World Taekwondo Team

Seven members of Liverpool’s North West Spirit Taekwondo Team have recently received news that they have been selected to be part of the Global Taekwondo International (GTI) squad heading to the World Championships in Italy this summer.

 

Olivia Connolly (10), Callum Edwards (10), Lois Jennings (16), Michael McCaw (16), Stefanie Davies (33), Lucy Sanders (32) and Jasmine Wahid (29) are all experienced and successful fighters on home soil. This will be their first competition abroad and will be a great opportunity to test their skills against international opponents.

 

The seven have been working towards selection since late last year, training several times per week in Liverpool as well as travelling to monthly squad training sessions in Cheltenham and competing in tournaments across the country. Over forty GTI members were put forward for consideration, but only a limited number of squad places were available; so competition was tough. To have seven Liverpool fighters on the 19-strong squad is a huge achievement for the team.

 

Despite being selected for the team, students are still required to fund some travel and accommodation costs for themselves and their families. The North West Spirit clubs will be fundraising over the next few months to help subsidise their team and would be grateful for any contributions or offers of sponsorship from the local community.
