Knowsley Youth Mutual totally commit to the young people of Merseyside

Knowsley - Wednesday 25th November. Knowsley Youth Mutual (KYM) proudly received ten licensees for Total Commitment Training by PDP, personal development specialists and educationalists.

When asked why KYM decided to embark upon the Total Commitment Training, Patricia Jackson, Business Development of KYM stated, “We have faced a number of challenges this last year from when we changed from being part of the local council to a mutual. By including Total Commitment Training into our portfolio, we are able to offer a new approach to all our schools throughout the region”. Patricia continues, “Moreover, we want to invest in our high-trained staff for them to diversify their portfolio as well”.

Paul Oginsky, Chief Executive of PDP comments, “We created tct to provide a structured, engaging approach to personal and social development. Comprising 18 hours of interactive training, participants move through the four phases to ensure they grow their self-awareness, focus and ambition to build on relationships, resilience and refection.” Paul continues, “We are proud of the commitment KYM has shown, and are delighted to be able to license their staff for tct.”

Gill Kirby from Knowsley Virtual School, also qualified from the tct training and states, “We work closely with KYM and Alex Roper our head teacher decided that we ought to embark upon the training to help children on the fringes as a preventative measure.” Continuing on, Gill says, “We want to offer creative ways to work with children in order to be able to support and guide them back on track to improve their lives. tct gives us ideal tools to achieve this.”

PDP rebranded earlier this year from Personal Development Point to launch their new Total Commitment Training. Other companies which have benefitted from this fresh approach include Dame Kelly Holmes Trust (Young people not in education, employment or training), Inspira Cumbria (Long term unemployed adults), Leicestershire council (Supporting Leicestershire Families) and Liverpool John Moores University.

Successful licensees from KYM are: Lyn Pye, Colin Scicluna, Maxine Ellis, Matty Donnelly, Rachael McGowan, Billy Randles, Molly Ryder, Ste Blackhurst, Gill Kirby (Attendance Support Officer) and Patricia Jackson.

Prescot Cables 0 - Northwich Victoria 2

SATURDAY 28TH NOVEMBER 2015 - EVO-STIK DIVISION ONE NORTH

Northwich Victoria increased their lead to six points at the top of Division One North with a 2-0 victory against Prescot Cables in atrocious conditions at Hope Street

Cables Manager Andy Paxton made eight changes from the team which had lost to Clitheroe in the Doodson Sports Cup a week last Tuesday.  Morrow, Flood, Shinks, Herbert, Joe Nicholson, McCulloch, Doran and Scarisbrick replacing Burgess, Glean, Mannion, Coyle, Joseph Evans, Joe Evans, Massey and Williams.

Northwich kicked off playing towards the Hope Street End and the ball ended up going out of play resulting in a throw in to Cables.  It was Northwich who applied the early pressure, Jordan Williams breaking down the left side and crossing into the penalty area for Howard but Joe Herbert was first to the ball and headed clear for Cables.  Northwich’s Brian Summerskill turned Jonah O’Reilly before crossing into the penalty area but once again Herbert cleared the danger. 

After withstanding this early pressure, Cables broke quickly and Anthony Shinks played the ball into Andy Scarisbrick who just failed to get a touch on the ball and Springthorpe in goal for Northwich was able to gather it and clear.

Northwich almost caught Cables napping when a long ball from the back put Jordan Williams clean through on goal but Morrow produced a fine save to deny Williams.  The rain was now heavy and both teams were having difficulty controlling the ball and passing it.  Williams pace down the left was proving a constant threat to Cables and he won a corner after his cross was blocked.

"Outstanding contributions "

Recently, the First Ark Group announced the winners of its annual Community Achievement Awards 2015. These unique awards celebrate the outstanding contributions made by individuals and businesses in the Knowsley community.

The First Ark Group received a record number of entries this year and there were nine eventual winners who were decided upon by an independent panel of judges.

One Ark’s Win a Salon winner is revealed as ‘All About Hair

Liverpool City Region-based investment charity One Ark, part of the First Ark Group, has named Shirley Allan, with her hair and beauty salon, ‘All About Hair’, as the lucky winner of its first Win a Salon competition. The prize includes a rent-free year in fully fitted out premises, situated in Knowsley Housing Trust’s (KHT) new development at Bluebell Park in Huyton.

Shirley, a hairdresser with over 20 years’ experience  has secured the salon together with a package of other business boosting support including marketing tools, mentoring, training and a year’s free membership to Knowsley Chamber of Commerce – all of which will help to support Shirley as she builds a sustainable business in the local community.

A Huyton resident herself, Shirley secured the prize following an extensive application process which included a practical hairdressing skills demonstration session and a formal interview with a panel of expert judges. She also had to demonstrate her business plans for the salon, including projected growth figures, plans for recruitment and competitive pricing.

‘All About Hair’ opened on Monday 9^th November 2015 and offers a full range of hair and beauty treatments to anyone in the local community as well as services tailored to meet the needs of the residents living in Bluebell Park.

Executive director at One Ark, Collette King, said: “We are absolutely delighted for Shirley; her passion for hairdressing and keen head for business was evident throughout every stage of the application process. The opening of ‘All About Hair’ ‘will enable Shirley to put years of salon and mobile hairdressing experience into building a thriving hair and beauty business.

“As a social investment charity, we work in partnership to offer a full menu of support and investment opportunities that help aspiring entrepreneurs to build sustainable and successful businesses which, ultimately, benefit and inspire communities across the Liverpool City Region. Commenting on her success, Shirley said: “After working from the age of 14 as a Saturday girl, I have always imagined owning my own salon so this is a dream come true. From my experience as a local mobile hairdresser, I hope to welcome new and existing clients for a relaxing and pampering experience. Not only this but I hope to grow the business, offer great local employment opportunities and develop into a competitive and much-needed facility for Bluebell Park and the wider community.”

Knowsley’s Local Plan is ‘sound’

The Local Plan Core Strategy for Knowsley has been found legally sound and compliant.

Government Inspector Martin Pike, who led the Examination in Public of the Plan, has published his final report which concludes that with the recommended modifications, the Plan satisfies legal requirements and complies with national planning policy.

The Local Plan is a vitally important document for the future of Knowsley as it will guide development in the borough up to 2028. It will set out where and how new development and regeneration happens in the borough to provide new homes and employment opportunities.

Cllr Mike Murphy, Knowsley’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Economic Development said: “I am very pleased that the Inspector’s report concludes that Knowsley has been thorough in the preparation of its Local Plan.  The report clearly supports the fact that the council has considered the available evidence and the views of the community and stakeholders thoroughly. I am therefore confident that Knowsley’s Local Plan is a sound foundation for the growth the borough in the future.”

The Inspector’s report will be considered by Knowsley Council’s Cabinet and full Council on 16 December. At the Council meeting, a decision will be made on the adoption of the Plan.

The Inspector’s Report can be viewed on the council’s website and in hard copy at libraries and One Stop Shops in Knowsley.

The report is the outcome of the independent Examination of the Local Plan Core Strategy, which included the public hearings in November 2013, July 2014 and June 2015.

The report concludes that with the recommended main modifications set out in its Appendix, the Knowsley Local Plan Core Strategy satisfies the legal requirements and meets national planning policy tests relating to “soundness”. Therefore, the report concludes that with the incorporation of the various modifications, the Local Plan Core Strategy provides an appropriate basis for the planning of Knowsley up to 2028.

At this stage of the process it is not legally possible for the Council to make further amendments to the Plan. The Plan can only be adopted in accordance with the conclusions of the Inspector’s Report.

Knowsley MP Pledges Support to Campaign for Slaughterhouse CCTV

Knowsley MP, George Howarth, has pledged his support to the campaign for mandatory CCTV inside UK slaughterhouses.

The campaign - which has widespread political and public support - was launched by Animal Aid, after five-years of investigating animal welfare breaches inside British slaughterhouses. The national organisation has placed fly-on-the-wall cameras inside ten slaughterhouses and found nine were breaking animal welfare laws.

The footage revealed: slaughterhouse workers kicking, punching and beating animals in the head and face; picking them up by ears, legs and fleeces and throwing them; burning them with cigarettes; using the electrical stunning tongs to inflict painful electric shocks on the animals; and hacking away at the throats of fully conscious sheep. Failure to stun animals properly was also common and a serious breach of the law.

New Greystone footbridge is open

The new Greystone footbridge across the M62 in Huyton is now open to the public.

The modern bridge spans the M62 between Junctions 4 and 5, and is an eye-catching cable-stayed structure.

Funded by Knowsley Council, the new bridge provides pedestrian and cyclist facilities which link the communities on either side of the motorway and will be used by more than 400 people each day.

It replaces the old bridge, known locally as the ‘sausage bridge’, which helped generations of the local community to safely cross the M62 since it opened in 1973. That structure had reached the end of its serviceable life and was demolished in August.

The new bridge will be illuminated in the evenings and will not only ensure a safe crossing route, but will also give visitors to Knowsley a real sense of arrival as they pass through this impressive gateway.

Cllr Mike Murphy, Knowsley’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Economic Development said: “I am delighted that the new footbridge is now open. This project is a significant investment into the boroughs infrastructure and the new bridge truly is an impressive, eye catching structure.

“I’d like to thank everyone who has worked on this project and also thank local residents and motorists for their understanding and patience while the work was carried out.”

“I’m sure the local community will take this new bridge into their hearts, just like they did with the old one and it will be used by many generations to come.”

The new bridge was officially opened by The Mayor of Knowsley, Cllr Edna Finneran on 18 November. Pupils from Malvern School, who use the bridge for their journeys to and from school, were amongst the first people to walk across the new bridge.

Year 6 pupils from the school have also designed artwork that will feature at the entrance of the new bridge. Ideas generated by the children will be incorporated into the final artwork design for two panels that will be fitted at the entrance to the footbridge on Roby Road.

School poppy display is stunning tribute

A stunning floral tribute created from handcrafted poppies has formed the centrepiece of one Knowsley school’s Remembrance Day.

Pupils at Stockbridge Village Primary have been busy creating the flowers in art lessons and at lunchtime, or even at home with family, to put towards a huge display in the school’s atrium.

As well as the poppies, the school have been spending time thinking about those who served, or who are serving in conflict. On Wednesday (Armistice Day) a service will be held in school, led by the children themselves, and in the coming weeks a trip to see the poppy installation at St George’s Hall, Liverpool, is planned.

It is part of the school’s curriculum of promoting values of liberty and respect, British history and British values.

Head teacher Jill Albertina, said: “There are a number of children in our school who have family members who served or are currently serving in the forces, so Remembrance Day is particularly poignant to them.

“It’s also important to us as a school to think about those who fought for the liberty of the country and what Remembrance means to us all.

“The poppies that the children have created look absolutely fantastic, and they are all extremely proud of the work they have put into the display. Now we’re really looking forward to visiting St George’s Hall to see what they have created too.”
