Beer Festival seeks new home

Local charities could lose thousands of pounds of financial support if the Rotary Club of Rainhill fails to find a new venue for its fund raising Beer Festival next year.

The Club’s 8th real ale festival, to be staged next Thursday, Friday and Saturday (11th, 12th and 13th Nov), could be the last following a decision by Knowsley Borough Council to close down Prescot Leisure Centre, the event’s current venue, in 2011.

The three day festival has raised nearly £100,000 since it was first staged in 2003. All the cash has been donated by the Rotary Club to worthy causes ranging from the new Rainhill Guide Hut and St Helens Youth Brass Band to Halton Haven Hospice and the Under 9’s MHS football team at Prescot.

Rainhill Rotary has launched a search for a new location large enough to accommodate next year’s festival but Graham Barker, Chairman of the Club’s Beer Festival Organising Committee, says the task is a tough one. “It is not easy to find a venue that can accommodate more than a thousand visitors over a three day event, but it would be a tragedy if the community was to lose such a valuable source of support.”

This Unibond Division One North match was the first encounter between the clubs and concluded with a surprise result.

In an entertaining first period, returnee Dean Thurston’s attempt at goal was blocked by keeper Hedge after a flowing move.  Moments later, Phil Cooney was undecided whether head or kick the ball when he met Aaron Rey’s looping cross at the far post.  Cooney could only hit the stand wall from 5 yards.

The second half became a war of attrition.

The breakthrough arrived after Prescot was awarded a free kick on 74 minutes.  Dale Wright floated the ball into the box.  As players went up to contest there may have been the slightest of touches as the ball nestled in the far corner of the net.

Andy Paxton then produced two miraculous saves in the 90th minute to keep Prescot noses in front.Following seven minutes of added time Prescot held out to inflict a first league defeat on Halifax.

Rainhill's past in pictures

An Exhibition of Photographs of Rainhill in the Past Hundred Years Rainhill Civic Society will welcome Rev, Bob Evans to open their Exhibition on Saturday 12th September in St Ann’s Millennium Centre, View Road, Rainhill. Bob was vicar in Rainhill during the 1970s and is remembered with great affection by many residents.

As a contribution to the National Heritage Open Days Scheme, Rainhill Civic Society is presenting an Exhibition of photographs, maps and other memorabilia showing what life in Rainhill was like throughout the 1900s.

We hope that members of the public will take advantage of this unique opportunity to look at Rainhill  Village and the immediate surrounding area through the camera lens, newspaper cuttings and individual reminiscences.

This is a free event which will be open to the public from 11am to 4pm on Saturday, 12th and Sunday 13th September and has been  funded by a lottery grant.

The response from members of the public to an appeal for photographs has brought in a fascinating selection of subjects – including views of the Village Centre decked out with bunting and flags for a Royal Visit in 1909, the crowing of the Rose Queen in 1927 and several photographs of buildings in and around Rainhill which have since been demolished. These include the Congregational Church which stood at the Holt and the Red Lion Inn, which was situated at Rainhill Stoops

Members of staff at St Helens History Library and Rainhill Library have been helpful with archive material and we have received assistance from the curator at The World  Of Glass.

Prescot Cables 0 Frickley Athletic 2

Goals from Frickley’s  Neil Towler, settled this close encounter, between two sides who needed the points to move further up the table.

Cables started the better and applied early pressure on the Frickley defence, without creating any clear cut chances.

Play was becoming very scrappy and both sides lacked the cutting edge to breakdown both solid looking defences. Close to half time Cables had two excellent opportunities, but both Byers and Moore shot straight at the keeper and the chances were lost. Early in the second half Frickley made Cables pay for those missed chance, when they scored twice in a seven minute spell.

Both goals were scored by Towler, First a free header, when a deep cross was missed by Cables static defence, and the second when a long ball found Towler clear and he lobbed the ball over the advancing keeper. Cables used all three substitutes to try and get back into the game, but although they applied a lot of pressure they were unable to create any chances and Frickley’s defence easily held on till full time.

The Prescot Festival Needs You

As the Fourth Annual Prescot Festival nears, with a gargantuan programme of music and arts events, organisers are keen to get the local community involved.

Folk sensation John Smith to play Prescot Festival

He's a Devonshire lad, he made his name in the pubs and clubs of Liverpool, and he's been described by folk legend John Renbourn as "the future of acoustic guitar music". He is singer-songwriter John Smith, one of the lead attractions at the Prescot Festival this June.

Smith has made a big impact on the Merseyside music scene, releasing his debut album, The Fox and the Monk, in 2006. More recently, he's taken his sound nationwide, supporting cult favourite John Martyn on tour.

Prescot Festival announces 2008 line-up

The Prescot Festival of Music and the Arts has announced Friday 20th to Sunday 29th June for its jam-packed 2008 programme.

Local musician Dr Robert Howard, Head of Music at Deyes High School in Maghull, founded the Festival in 2005 as a way for Prescot to contribute to Liverpool’s year as European Capital of Culture.

“We’re a hundred percent behind the Capital of Culture, and felt strongly that a town with such a rich history and heritage should be involved,” said Robert. “We’ve grown from being a weekend-long event in 2005 to 10 days in 2007 and 2008. It’s only been onward and upward.”

Rainhill Town celebrates a successfull season

The 2007 season was the most successful season they have had at the club. The members also wish to thank their main sponsor Mike Hayman managing director of MH Communications.

The club won the Warrington and District Premier Division League Title, The Jubilee Cup and the Liverpool County FA Junior Cup. Also Pictured below celebrating their win with the Reg Oliver Trophy are some members of the the reserves.

In addition the club have won both the The Premier Division Title and Jubilee Cup for the last two seasons.

Chairman, Neil Thompson wished to thank all the supporters and players for a great season .
